Abstract:
Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a sleep disorder with various adverse health-related consequences that has been extensively reported in the past decade. Awareness of this syndrome has grown among medical practitioners and the public. Thus, dentists, who commonly see their patients at least every six months, should be able to recognize the common signs and symptoms of OSA in their patients. Craniofacial disharmony is an important predisposing factor in the development and progression of OSA. Dentofacial orthopedics and orthodontics, which involves the evaluation of jaw growth and the correction of skeletal and dental relationships, can play an important role in the diagnosis and treatment of OSA. Although OSA can occur in patients of any age, it is essential to realize that the classification, pathophysiology, signs, symptoms, and treatment of OSA can be different between children and adults. This review article provides an overview to dentists and orthodontists regarding how they can contribute to the health of children and adults with OSA.
